Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin is a distinguished academic whose career spanning over three decades, has significantly impacted the academic and research landscape of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). With an academic background rooted in mathematics and physics, Prof. Ridza has made notable contributions to teaching, research, and service in the fields of quantum optics, quantum information processing, and mathematical modelling. His academic journey began with an undergraduate degree in Physics from the UMIST, UK (1982-1984). He furthered his studies, earning a master’s degree in Theoretical Physics (1984-1987) before pursuing his PhD. in Theoretical Physics at the same institution (1987-1989). This robust educational foundation laid the groundwork for his future endeavours in academia and research. Prof. Ridza joined IIUM in 2001 and quickly became an integral part of the university’s growth. He has held key leadership positions, including Dean of Research Management Centre, Dean of Office of Corporate Strategy and Quality Assurance and Deputy Rector (Research and Innovation). Under his leadership, IIUM witnessed the establishment of Malaysia’s first Quantum Cryptography Research Group, a milestone that positioned the country as a significant player in the field. His contributions to teaching are equally impressive, as he has taught a wide array of courses in mathematics, physics, and computer science to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Known for his ability to simplify complex scientific concepts, Prof. Ridza has left a lasting impression on his students, many of whom have gone on to make their own significant contributions in academia and industry. He is also instrumental for the introduction and development of the IIUM Bachelor of Science (Hon) in Mathematical Sciences which has now successfully produced twenty cohorts of mathematical sciences graduates. In addition to his teaching, Prof. Ridza is a prolific researcher. His work in quantum optics and quantum information processing has advanced understanding in the field, while his research in cryptography has addressed pressing challenges in cybersecurity, particularly with the advent of quantum- resistant algorithms. Prof Ridza had the opportunity to be seconded to MIMOS Berhad (a wholly owned government company) mandated to conduct R&D in ICT and Microelectronics for the period 2005 until 2011. He has published extensively in high-impact international journals and has supervised numerous research projects that have earned him recognition on a global scale. This has culminated with the award of the higher doctoral degree, Doctor of Science (DSc) by UMIST, UK in December 2004. Beyond his teaching and research, Prof. Ridza has served on various influential committees and boards. He is a Fellow of Malaysia Academy of Sciences and is currently the Chair of the Information Technology and Computer Science Discipline. His leadership in organising international conferences and workshops has facilitated collaborations between Malaysian scholars and their international counterparts, further strengthening Malaysia’s position in global academic and research networks. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and education, Prof. Ridza was awarded the prestigious 2009 (ISC)2 Asia Pacific Information Security Leadership Achievement – Senior IT Security Professional Category and 2011 IDG ASEAN Chief Security Officer (CSO ) Award, a recognition that highlights his influence and standing in the international scientific community. His lifetime of service to IIUM and the broader academic community is now further acknowledged with this conferment of Professor Emeritus by IIUM, a title that reflects his enduring impact on education and research. Prof. Ridza’s legacy extends beyond his own achievements, as he continues to inspire future generations of scholars, researchers, and educators. Through his commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and community service, YBhg. Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin has left an indelible mark on IIUM and the academic community at large. As an Emeritus Professor, his influence will continue to guide and inspire, ensuring that his contributions to the fields of mathematics, physics, and computer science will have a lasting impact for years to come.
