46 47 EMERITUS PROFESSOR BIOGRAPHY OF PROF. DATO’ DR. MOHD. AZMI OMAR Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of INCEIF University. He joined IIUM in 1983 and retired in 2019, after serving the University for 36 years. His contributions to the field of Islamic economics and finance, both in academia and industry, nationally and globally, are immense. At IIUM, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar was a professor at the Department of Finance and Department of Business Administration, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences. He was also the Dean of the Kulliyyah from 1996 to 2003. From 2003 to 2008, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar held the position of Deputy Rector (Academic and Research). He was the Dean of the Office of Corporate Strategy and Quality Assurance from 2008 to 2009 and the Dean of IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance from 2009 to 2011. Prior to his appointment at INCEIF University, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar was the Director-General of the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group from 2012 until 2017. At IIUM, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar held various administrative positions and recorded excellent service as an academic administrator. When he was the Deputy Rector (Academic & Research) and Dean of the Office of Corporate Strategy and Quality Assurance, he led the team that enabled IIUM to win the “Hall of Fame” award for Balanced Score Card implementation. He spearheaded the revision of the University’s strategic plan and developed and designed strategies and incentives to increase research, publications, and postgraduate students in IIUM. He led the initiative for the Memorandum of Agreement with Path Solutions, one of the largest Islamic banking solution providers in the world, whereby Path Solutions agreed to donate their Islamic banking system (iMAL) to the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking & Finance (IIiBF) when he was the Dean of IIiBF. He continues to be a valuable mentor to young academics within the Department of Finance at KENMS, actively contributing his academic expertise to the department despite his transition to the industry and retirement. Throughout his tenure at the university, he consistently received high praises as an outstanding lecturer and supervisor from both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar holds various awards and recognitions at the international and national levels. He was recognized as: • Top 500 of the world’s most prominent and influential personalities in the Islamic world in Islamica 500. • The Most Outstanding Individual Contribution to Islamic Finance in the KLIFF Islamic Finance Awards 2015. • Lifetime Achievement Award in Islamic Economics and Finance at the 3rd World Islamic Economics and Finance Conference Pakistan in 2020. • A member of the Board of Trustees of Responsible Finance & Investment (RFI) Foundation. • A member of the External Advisory Group for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Interdepartmental Working Committee on Islamic Finance. • A Member of the Shariah Advisory Committee at Securities Commission Malaysia, Bank Rakyat Malaysia, Etiqa Takaful Malaysia, and MUFG Bank Malaysia, and was formerly an Islamic Finance Expert Advisor to the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (Brunei Monetary Authority). Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar has also advised and provided technical assistance to IsDB member countries in their implementation of Islamic Finance, introduced innovative policy research which culminated in flagship reports such as IRTI Islamic Social Finance Report and IsDB-World Bank Global Report on Islamic Finance, and led the development of the Indonesia Shari’ah Economy Masterplan 2019-2024 and Kazakhstan Islamic Finance Masterplan 2020-2025. Under his excellent stewardship, IRTI had received these following accolades : • “Best Research and Development in Islamic Finance” for two consecutive years in a row, 2014 and 2015. • “Best Islamic Infrastructure Development Institutions” during the 6th Global Islamic Finance Awards 2016. • “Most Outstanding Institution for Contribution to Islamic Finance” in Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum (KLIFF) 2014.
