He was born in Kangar in 1949. After completing secondary school at Malay College Kuala Kangsar, he studied medicine at University of Malaya (UM), (1969 to 1974). His career in medicine started in General Hospitals, Penang and Kangar, followed by a six months stint in Saudi Arabia for the Malaysian Pilgrims Fund Board. Following that, he joined the University of Malaya as a trainee medical officer. In 1978 he joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as trainee lecturer in internal medicine. He obtained his MRCP in 1980 (Edinburgh), followed by DMRT (London) and FFRRCSI (Dublin) in 1985, FRCP in 1990 (Glasgow) and FRCP in 1994 (Edinburgh). Following his internal medicine training, he studied clinical oncology which he completed in three years before returning to serve as a medical teacher and consultant in clinical oncology in UKM and General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. At UKM, Dato’Dr Md Tahir MdAzhar was appointed as Deputy Dean (Development and Training), editor of its medical journal, and a consultant in radiotherapy and oncology. Besides being active in several professional bodies including the Malaysian Oncology Society (President) until 1997 and Asia-Oceania Clinical Oncology Association (Secretary) until 1998, he was on the scientific committee for several conferences on cancer including the Asean Conference on Gynaecological Cancer and Asia Pacific Conference on Cancer. He was also Vice President of Malaysian National Cancer Council (MAKNA) until 1998. Dato’ Dr Md Tahir features regularly in local and regional postgraduate training assessment and examinations in internal medicine and radiology. He also delivered many lectures on various topics in his specialty at both national and international meetings. He wrote a book on the Treatment of Uterine Cancer (UKM, 1995) and translated three textbooks into Malay (on clinical practice, oncology, and nervous system disorders). In 2002, he was selected as one of the International Advisors for the world renowned textbook of medicine – Davidson’s Principle and Practice of Medicine 19th Golden Jubilee Edition which he served for three consecutive editions until 2014. Dato’ Dr Md Tahir also had several engagements at the international level. In 1999 he represented Malaysia in the RCA Committee of IAEA as advisor in training of radiation oncology workers for developing countries through distance learning. In June 2000, he was on the IAEA advisory committee to draft the future use of long life radioisotopes in Vienna, Austria. In 2001 he was nominated by IAEA to advise on the introduction of linear accelerators in Hanoi Cancer Centre, Republic of Vietnam. In a span of more than forty years of his professional life, Dato’ Dr Md Tahir served as a medical officer, clinical teacher, consultant specialist in oncology and administrator in both the ministry of health and universities. A widely travelled individual, he is at ease with people of all cultural backgrounds. He retired from IIUM in 2015 and in his retirement has taken up a medical teaching position at Taylors University medical school. HONOURABLE DATO’ DR MD TAHIR MD AZHAR
