His academic excellence and significant contribution to the field of economics and Islamic finance locally and worldwide were recognized and he has received several awards and recognitions. Among the awards were the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (1998), carrying the title Dato’; the Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Kedah (2005), also carrying the title Dato’ and the Darjah Gemilang Mahkota Kedah which carries the title Dato’ Wira. Internationally, he received Gold Medal Award from the Kingdom of Cambodia in November 2012 for his contribution in Education to Minority Muslims in Cambodia. In December 2012, Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman received another Gold Medal Award from the ISOSS at the 12th Islamic Countries Conference on Statistical Sciences (ICCS) at University of Qatar, Doha. Adding to the list of awards is the High Dignity and Peaceful Coexist (Gold Medal) Award Subclass Mohasena, awarded by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Royal Palace Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia in 2015. Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman was also actively involved in publications, research and conferences locally and internationally. He published in numerous highly established and recognized journals which include the International Journal of Business and Social Sciences, the Journal of Muamalat and Islamic Finance Research, the American Journal of Applied Sciences, the International Journal of Economics and Management and in the La Sagesse. He also participated in numerous conferences, presenting papers mostly on Islamic Finance, Economic Development, Takaful, Zakat and Poverty Eradication. Among the conferences he attended and participated are the 3rd International Zakat Conference on Zakat in Kuala Lumpur in 1990; the 7th Annual General Meeting, Pakistan Society of Development Economists in Islamabad in 1991; The International Conferences on Poverty in the Muslim World and Communities, organised by International Institute of Muslim Unity at IIUM in 2004; the Islamic Economics Workshop at Universitas Airlanggar, Surabaya Indonesia in 2007; the 5th International Islamic Finance Conference, Kuala Lumpur in 2007, a forum on the Islamic Perspective: New Approaches to Development, Management and Governance in Manila in 2008; the Conference on Islamic Tourism and Hotel Industry in Kuala Lumpur in 2012 and many more. His research area encompasses the area of Islamic Banking and Finance, Economic Development, Eradication of Poverty, Zakat, Development Strategy, Takaful, Islamic Higher Institutions, Statistics and many others. He was the Advisory panel for Master in Business programme (Halal Product), Faculty of Economy and Muamalat, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in 2007 and a Consultant and Advisor in a consultancy service for the preparation of User and Technical requirement for the Department of Statistics Malaysia ICT Project Implementation. Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman shares his wisdom and his area of expertise with numerous PhD and Master Programme candidates in their theses supervision. He contributed to academic excellence and promotions by being appointed External Examiners for promotions to the post of professors at the University of Islamabad, Pakistan in 2007. He was also an assesment panel member for Quality Assesment Program in Economics and Business, UKM and Head of UM Assesment Panel in 2006. Dato’Wira Dr Jamil Osman is a scholar in Islamic economics and one of the pioneers in the inception and development of Islamic Banking and Finance in Malaysia. Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman was a former Rector of the Insaniah University College from 2008-2013. Prior to working at Insaniah, he served as the Dean of Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, in 2006-2008, as the Deputy Rector of Academic Affairs, (1998-2003) and as the Dean of Admissions and Records Division (1990-1998) at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Currently, Dato’Wira Dr Jamil Osman is Director and Regional Representative for the International Institute of Islamic Thought for East and Southeast Asia Region since 2014. He was also a Senior Academic Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Economics IIUM, and also a Technical Advisor at the Universal Cresent Standard Centre for the Islamic Quality Standard at University Teknologi Mara (UiTM). Throughout his career as an academic, DatoWira Dr Jamil Osman has held several professional memberships. Presently, Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman is a member of the Board of Director and Chairman of Consultancy Committee at the Yayasan Institusi Beraja Malaysia (YIN). He was also a member of the Research Coordination Committee on Islamic Economics and the Islamic Economics Institutions Databases Committee at IRTI, Jeddah (1990-1992). He held the position of the Assistant Secretary to the Islamic Economics and Management Association of Malaysia (IEMAM) in 1994-1996 and was President for the Institute of Statistics Malaysia 2004-2012. BIOGRAPHY Born on March 5th, 1950, in Kepala Batas, Kedah, Dato’Wira Dr Jamil Osman received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kepala Batas and Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Garong, Kota Baharu, Kelantan. In 1962, being a bright and hardworking student, he was named as the overall best student in the state of Kelantan. He pursued a four-year degree programme in Statistics at the Institute Teknologi Mara (ITM) and furthered his study at Professional Institute of Statisticians in the United Kingdom until 1975. His passion for education and knowledge did not stop there as he then enrolled himself at Western Michigan University, USA and successfully graduated in MSc in Applied Statistics in 1981. His interest in teaching and sharing knowledge with others initiated him to take up a Certificate in Teaching at ITM in 1982 and in 1985 he received a Diploma in Islamic Studies from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Dato’Wira Dr Jamil Osman pursued his PhD in Management Economics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) New York, USA in 1985-1988. Happily married to Datin Zuraidah bAhmad Murad, Dato’Wira Dr Jamil Osman is blessed with four children. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Dato’ Wira Dr Jamil Osman possesses vast experience in teaching undergraduates as well as postgraduates and started his career as an academic at the Department of Economics and Statistics, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) in 1973-1975. In 1976 he served Mara Institute of Technology (ITM) until 1983 and later joined IIUM in 1983-2008. He then joined Insaniah University College in 2008 -2013. Among the subjects he taught were Research Methodology, Econometrics, Statistics, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics with Islamic inputs, Project and Policy Evaluation with Islamic inputs, Islamic Financial Institutions and Time Series and Forecasting.
