Hj Hassan was born on 24th June, 1951 in Pekan, Pahang Darul Makmur. Tan Sri Sidek holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree in Public Administration from the University of Malaya and a master's degree in Business Administration from the New Hampshire College, United States. Tan Sri Sidek began his career in the Administrative and Diplomatic Services on 15th April 1974 as an Assistant Director at the International Trade Division, Ministry of Trade and Industry. Tan Sri Sidek later served as the Assistant Trade Commissioner at the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, from May 1977 until July 1980. After serving in Japan for nearly 3 years, Tan Sri Sidek served as a Principal Assistant Director in the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department before being to Deputy Director, Project Analysis Sector and subsequently as the Deputy Director of Research in the same department between August 1980 to July 1984. Tan Sri Sidek has vast experience within the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). During the tenure in MITI, Tan Sri Sidek had held the positions of Malaysia’s Trade Commissioner in Sydney, Australia, Deputy Director in the Policy and Research Division, Deputy Director (Operations) in the International Trade Division, Minister Counselor of Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington, D.C., United States, and the Director of Multilateral Relations Division. Having served MITI and the government as senior officer moving up in rank holding various important positions, Tan Sri’s competency, committment, and excellent performance made him the favorable candidate to be appointed as the Deputy Secretary-General (Trade) on 19th January 2001. Later Tan Sri Sidek became the Secretary-General of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry on 24 October 2004. Tan Sri Sidek’s excellent service record and vast experiences in administration within the Malaysian civil service saw him being elevated to a higher position, entrusted by the government to lead over 1.4 million civil servants in Malaysia. He was officially appointed by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong as the 12th Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia on the 3rd September 2006 and was in the office until 23rd June 2012. Two of his most notable contributions to the improvement of Malaysian civil services are the introduction of financial procedure which requires all payments billed to the government to be settled within 14 days and the adoption of the Blue Ocean Strategy by government agencies. In recognition for his contributions and excellent services, he has been confered with various medals and awards throughout his career from states and Federal Government. Two of the highest awards are P.M.N. and P.S.M. which carries the title “Tan Sri”. He has been cenfered with Honorary Doctorate Degree in PublicAdministration from UNITAR and Honorary Doctorate Degree in Management from both UPM and UteM. Tan Sri Sidek was appointed the Fifth President of the Islamic International University Malaysia, replacing Tan Sri Sanusi Junid who was the Fourth President of IIUM, effective 2nd June 2010. Tan Sri Sidek served as President of IIUM until 1st June 2013. Tan Sri Sidek was appointed as the Chairman of PETRONAS starting 1st July 2015 after retiring from the Malaysian Civil Service to enable the management of PETRONAS to benefit from his vast experience in managing international trade and civil service. Tan Sri Sidek has been a true public servant, who have served the country from international trade, global business, and multilateral relations as well as enhancing the performances of the Malaysian civil service.
