SHAMSUDDIN ABDUL KADIR, SAPURA GROUP FOUNDER HONOURABLE TAN SRI IR. SHAMSUDDIN ABDUL KADIR, SAPURA GROUP FOUNDER Tan Sri Shamsuddin was born in Ipoh on 19th August 1931. His father, En. Abdul Kadir bin Mat was a driver to a Manager of a reputable tin mining company called Osborne and Chappel . His mother, Puan Latipah binti Mohd. was a housewife. Young Shamsuddin completed his primary education in Batu Road Primary School in 1948 and later went to Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur from 1949 until 1953. In between studies young Shamsuddin worked as a caddy at the Royal Selangor Golf Club. Tan Sri Shamsuddin later went to the United Kingdom to pursue his degree studies at Brighton College of Technology, a former constituent of the University of Brighton. Upon successfully completing the Degree program in Electrical Engineering at the College, Tan Sri Shamsuddin underwent 2 years of practical training in UK from 1957 until 1959 before returning to Malaysia to start his professional career as a Telecom Control- ler at Telecom Perak, and later served as Controller of Lines Administration and Training at Telecom Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur in 1971. He worked as Executive Director of United Motors Works (UMW) in 1971 until 1975 before becoming the Managing Director (later Chairman) of Sapura Group in 1984, a company that he had founded named after his beloved wife YBhg Puan Sri Siti Sapura Husin. Tan Sri also served as Chairman and Director of Sapura Technology Berhad, Sapura Industrial Berhad and Sapura Resources Berhad. Starting out as a supplier for telecommunication system with just six employees , the Sapura Group later grew to dominate telecommunication business in the country making the Sapura telephone a household name and the company pioneered in developing telecommunication system in Malaysia through manufacturing of telephone terminals, public pay-phones and card phones. Tan Sri Shamsuddin’s strong commitment to life-long education led him to co-found the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Foundation where he had served as Chairman of the Universiti from 2001 until 2009. In recognition of his guidance and leadership at UTHM he was later inaugurated as the first Pro-Chancellor of UTHM in June, 2009. He was awarded with Honorary Doctorate in Engineering by Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1991, Honorary Doctorate in Business Management by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1991, and Honorary Doctorate in Technology Management by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1994. Tan Sri Shamsuddin was also instrumental in the formation of Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (later upgraded to Asia Pacific University College of Technology and Innovation) offering programs mainly in Information Technology. Tan Sri Shamsuddin had also served in the Malaysian National Council for Scientific Research and Development, the National Productivity Corporation and the Malaysian Business Council. He was also involved in a number of non-Governmental organizations holding the post of Chairman of Bank Islam Malaysia, Vice-Chairman of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Board of Directors, Malaysian Institute of Directors, International Union of Architects and Commonwealth Association of Architects, and Co- Chairman of Malaysia-Russia Business Council. Tan Sri Shamsuddin’s contribution to International Islamic University has been enormous. He was a member of the Majlis of the University representing the Malaysian Public of Vast Experience with Higher Education or Professional Management in 2009- 2012, and a member of Advisors of the International Institute of Islamic Thoughts and Civilization. A very keen golfer, Tan Sri has also contributed substantially to the development of golf in IIUM. For his excellent and distinguished services to the country he was awarded Darjah Kebesaran Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Johor in 1985 by HRH the Sultan of Johor, Darjah Kebesaran Dato’ Paduka Cura Simanja Kini (DPCM) by HRH Sultan of Perak and the Pingat Johan Mangku Negara JMN in 1984 and Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) in 1989 by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ir. Shamsuddin bin Abdul Kadir is a renowned Professional Muslim Engineer who has contributed vastly in the area of communication engineering and also being one of the most successful Malaysian entrepreneurs. IIUM takes pride to confer upon Tan Sri the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Engineering and Entrepreneurship as recognition of his truly distinguished and outstanding contribution to communication engineering, entrepreneurship and education in Malaysia. May his service to the Ummah be rewarded with peace, mercy and the blessing of Allah SWT.
